ABF gives a grant to a service charity in Germany for the first time

The ABF has donated £3,000 to a flourishing charity providing assistance to Army families in Germany who have children with special educational needs.

The St Francis Special Needs and Portage Trust runs a Portage service solely within Germany for British Army families, and is entirely dependent on voluntary donations for all running costs, equipment and staffing.

This is the first time that the ABF has given a grant to a charity outside the UK. For over sixty years the charity has worked tirelessly to provide financial and practical support to soldiers, former soldiers and their families in times of need.

“We currently have eight children receiving Portage in the Rhine Garrison area, which shows that we are providing a much-needed service. It is only through this kind of support and generosity that we are able to provide the families with this Portage service.”

Sally Schofield, administrator of the Trust

Portage is a home-visiting educational service for pre-school children with support needs. Portage offers practical help and inspiration to develop a child's interests, and aims to equip parents with the skills and confidence they need to help their child, whatever the child's difficulties may be.
