Monty arrives to oversee proceedings
With rock cakes, gunfire and 1940s singalong, Endcliffe Barracks was swept back in time to the War years in September, in a commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the end of World War Two. The event not only gave visitors the chance to experience the 1940s, but also raised money for the Army Benevolent Fund.
'Operation Phoenix' brought to life many memories of the 1940s, as re-enactors, dressed in the uniforms of both allied and axis powers, staged famous war scenes, and ENSA entertainers sang rousing wartime songs to keep morale high. A Field Marshal Montgomery look-alike even arrived in style in the original car belonging to the great man himself.
The event also included a 1940s dance, a clothes show, complete with bathing suits and painted legs to look like stockings, and a NAAFI, ensuring visitors had a refreshing tea break.
