The Royal Hospital Chelsea hosts a 'curry cook off'

Monday 5 February 2007 saw the launch of a spicy new fundraising initiative from the ABF, World's Biggest Curry Lunch (WBCL).

The launch event, at The Royal Hospital Chelsea included a 'curry cook off' between the World’s Biggest Curry Lunch Chef Alfred Prasad, Michelin star holder and Executive Chef at the Tamarind and Eberahim Kazim, Chef at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. The competing spicy dishes were sampled and judged by a panel of exceptionally well-qualified food critics, the Chelsea Pensioners. Bhaji the elephant, the WBCL Mascot had the casting vote in this nail-biting and close run battle, in which Alfred Prasad was ultimately triumphant!

Why curry?

The aim of World's Biggest Curry Lunch is to invite everyone across the UK to host a curry lunch for family, friends and colleagues in our Big Curry Week commencing 16 April 2007 to raise badly needed funds for the ABF. The Army will be joining in, in garrisons and operational theatres across the world.

To coincide with the launch a special free fundraising pack has been produced containing exclusive recipes, vouchers and other goodies to help participants plan their events. Visit our curry pages to find out more.

Why now?

Dependent on voluntary donations, the ABF must currently raise over £5 million each year to continue its vital work with the Army family. This exciting new initiative has been launched in the face of increasing demand for support from the Army family, particularly in light of the number of recent operational casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"We hope that World's Biggest Curry Lunch will spice up our fundraising and invigorate the British public. The Army family needs our support now more than ever and I sincerely hope that everyone will get behind the young men and women of the Army and have a curry in April '07"

Major General Sir Evelyn Webb-Carter, Controller of the ABF
